In Partnership: Bertioli X Lorfords Contemporary

About:

Many local readers will have heard of Lorfords Antiques, founded by Toby Lorford in 2003 in Tetbury, it and has been supplying Thyme with antique furnishings for many years. While selling antiques, Toby was approached by a number of customers asking whether he could create replications of antique furniture designs using materials that would withstand modern life.

In 2015, he was approached by chef Marco Pierre White to help furnish one of his hotel projects - The English House in Singapore - with furniture inspired by Howard & Sons originals. This was when the Lorfords Contemporary workshop was born, specialising in bespoke handcrafted upholstery and furnishings made using traditional methods and with responsible materials.

With their own dedicated workshop in the town of Stroud (just down the road from Thyme) they have a small team of 10 expert upholsters and makers. In 2020, Caryn was looking to refresh some of the upholstered furniture in a number of the rooms at Thyme and approached Lorfords.

Alongside Caryn and Milly, Lorfords have spent many hours analysing the spaces and needs of each room, looking at where to draw inspiration from and designs shapes to promote flexibility and longevity and complement the unique hand drawn fabric designs.

Lorfords traditional Elmstead sofa takes pride of place in The Tithe Barn with Caryn’s Oak leaf print and further Lorfords Contemporary designs in bedrooms ‘Radish’ and ‘Carrot’. Over the coming seasons, as further Bertioli fabrics are revealed, Lorfords and Bertioli are planning many more collaborations.

“Our Stroud based workshop specialises in hand-crafted bespoke upholstery and is just down the road from Thyme in the Cotswolds, so the opportunity to work with Caryn and Milly on creating bespoke furnishings for the hotel was a great way to showcase local craftsmanship. Each room required something different in terms of space and aesthetic, and a lot of development went into creating silhouettes and frameworks that would would compliment the striking patterns of the surrounding Bertioli fabrics and wallpapers.”

-  Nasia de la Haye - Lead Designer & MD of Lorfords Contemporary

Caryn: What are the first steps, when working on a collaboration like this?

Nasia: Our first step is always to ensure that we share the same approach to responsible, sustainable design that will have minimal impact on the environment. Bertioli completely ticked these boxes for us with a focus on local craftsmanship and respect for the natural world, so we were thrilled when Caryn approached us about a partnership.

The first step was a design meeting with Caryn and Milly to understand the objective of our design deliverables. We had a tour of Thyme, viewing the rooms and the grounds, which Caryn and Milly draw inspiration from, and we started brainstorming ways we can transform those natural inspirations into tangible furniture designs to suit their requirements.

I vividly remember Milly sharing a picture of a greenhouse they have on site and asking for it to become a headboard design. We started with a picture and developed concept drawings, technical drawings, custom details, prototypes and finally the end product. I spent a lot of time visiting Thyme and understanding the hospitality industry; the needs of the hotel as well as the needs of the customer of course, how to design to compliment the Bertioli fabrics with the same passion and beauty they present.

Caryn: How long does the design process take from the initial design to finished product?

Nasia: For this project it took a little over a year, which is a little longer than our typical collaborations take but absolutely necessary for both brands. The hospitality industry was new to us, and I wanted to spend all the time it deserved to understand it fully before proposing any designs, as well as the fact that alongside our furniture collaboration the Bertioli team was also developing and growing their fabrics and interiors line. We were both on a journey of learning and we wanted to remain true to the natural evolution of the collection, moving at a pace which felt calming, peaceful and most of all would last the test of time.

Caryn: What are the most enjoyable and most challenging moments in making bespoke custom made pieces?

Nasia: I love the creative challenges that each bespoke project presents. We’re working with lots of interior designers and clients each week, putting together completely different room schemes, that range hugely in terms of aesthetics from cottagecore to contemporary, kitsch to minimal.

As a designer, it keeps you on your toes, which I really enjoy, you’re introduced to so many different concepts it inspires you to constantly keep thinking and discover ideas. Some clients come to us with a very vague idea of what they want, others, with a very precise brief, and I enjoy the creative freedom to present a range of ideas about what we can create at the workshop and again push clients to think outside the box a bit more.

The most challenging moment is seeing your conceptual drawings become physical frameworks. At that point, you go from an idea on paper to a tangible product you can touch and need to develop into a finished piece of furniture.

Translating all the finishing details, comfort levels and ergonomics of those initial drawings to real pieces, is a very challenging part of the process and I couldn’t do it without our skilled team of experienced makers.  During this time there is a lot of back and forth, a lot of revisions, tests and development so ensuring each decision is the right one to finalise can be challenging, yet so rewarding.

Where and how can you purchase these Bertioli x Lorfords pieces?

You can purchase these designs online from Lorfords Contemporary and Bertioli.

Bringing Nature Indoors: Thyme's new 'Cutting Garden Rooms’ in collaboration with Edward Bulmer Natural Paint

Mother Nature is the mostassured and accomplished colourist of all time, and we always look to her for daily inspiration. From fruits to flowers to the contrast of seasonal skies with our landscapes, there are natural palettes and pairings right on our doorstep for the taking and creating.

At the heart of Thyme’s ethos lies a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and a respect for the natural world. It is this shared ethos that has fostered a long-standing friendship and mutual respect between Thyme and Edward Bulmer Natural Paint. Over many years, the rooms at the hotel have been painted in our plant-based colours. Caryn, has created a palette of soft greens, pinks and earthy shades, all which blend with the picturesque Gloucestershire landscape. The interiors at Thyme and the Bertioli collections are all about bringing the outside in, creating a full sensory experience.

With the English country garden in mind and the summer months fast approaching, it is only natural that our collaboration included a lot of pinks and greens. But what is wonderful to see in these curated palettes is all of the different tones and how the designs work across the colours groups - and with more surprising colours too, such as the deep reds and earthy browns.

Edward Bulmer Natural Paint is made from plants, - without nasty chemicals or fossil fuel derived plastics. We create the colours using a ground-breaking plant-based binder mixed with the finest earth and mineral pigments; and because the colours all derive from the same family of pigments, they can all work in tonal harmony together. By using colours created, quite literally, from the earth, it is easy to see the natural difference in these paints. Gone are the flat, lack lustre walls of mainstream paints, instead, you see living walls with colours that respond to the changing seasons and light.

There is no better way to lift one’s mood than to bring nature indoors in this way. If you start with nature, you can’t go wrong. Interiors and colours inspired by nature have the same effect; they ground us, invigorate us and at the same time, with the right shade, they calm us.

These colours make the perfect soft backdrop to the new ‘Cutting Garden’ designs, gracefully allowing the flowers to hold centre stage, whether they be fabrics on soft furnishings or complementing walls covered in exquisite wallpapers.

Laying the Table for your Well-Being

Laying the Table for your Well-Being

The idea that a tablecloth could make your food taste better might seem like a strange one. However, according to a scientific study, the impact that a beautifully dressed table can have on one’s perception of a meal is profound.

The study, which involved a number of participants and the changing variables of light and table linens, has inspired us to think about the way we dress our tables and the benefits of bringing the outside, inside.

The Science of a Well-Dressed Table

As part of the study, diners were invited to eat a bowl of soup. The diners who had soup in a room more dimly lit noticed that their soup tasted different. This change in perception was attributed to one’s sense of taste being heightened when their vision was impeded.

More importantly for those of us with a penchant for beautifully laid tables, was the outcome that the effect of using table linens had. The study showed that dressing the table with a cloth had a positive effect not only on how people perceive the taste of their meal, but the amount eaten and the length of time that people dined for.

A Connection to Nature

With this in mind, we look to our own collection of tablecloths, each one inspired by the nature that surrounds us here at Thyme.

Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, can have an instantly calming effect on us. It can enhance mood, and reduce feelings of stress or anxiety. Perhaps you are a city dweller, who loves to be outside but doesn’t feel they have enough time to connect with nature. Having elements of the natural world in your home is an important way of connecting to nature on a different, yet still beneficial level.

Our Patterns of Nature table linens fill a space with a sense of calm. The colour, the curvilinear lines of the leaves and petals help us to feel immersed in the outside world even when we are inside.

By choosing linens inspired by nature, you are fulfilling your bodies innate tendency to seek a connection with nature and will reap the positive well-being effects that being immersed in nature has on your health.

Inspired Conversations

In the Hibbert family’s kitchen, there has long been an oak counter with three weighty drawers, all brimming with table linens. Brightly coloured, heavily patterned, or plain white with beautiful embroidery – there is one for every occasion and each with an interesting provenance that sparks thought-provoking conversation around thedinnertable. This was what inspired Caryn to create her own table linens, hand painted with her ‘Patterns of Nature’.

So next time you are thinking about purchasing a new tablecloth for your home, perhaps consider your table setting and use it as a way to connect with nature, engage in conversation, all the while enhancing the deliciousness of your food!

The Science of Breathing ~ Caryn Hibbert

The Science of Breathing ~ Caryn Hibbert

The Healing Circle of Breath, Scent & Nature for Body, Mind & Planet

Imagine you are standing in a wild meadow, a place filled with long grasses, flowers and herbs, their delicate fragrance filling the air creating a scent that embodies that place, your mind takes a mental note.

Enveloped in these healing botanicals, you naturally take a slow deep breath, drinking in the scent of nature. A sense of peace and contentment floods through your body, a quietening of both body and mind, instilling a sense of calm, & focus.

Switching off the body’s stress response has profound effects on our wellbeing and understanding this gives you a powerful tool for life, enabling you to harness the body’s innate and powerful ability to heal itself.

It is the immersion in nature, scent and conscious, deep breathing that together trigger this phenomenal wellbeing response and in turn, inspires a deeper connection to the natural world.

It is true that those who engage in nature are more likely to take action to protect it, preserve wild spaces and consolidate the understanding that in nurturing nature we nurture ourselves.

A deep breath

Enriched with healing botanical essential oils that create a scent rooted in wild spaces, our Bertioli breathing products promote deep breathing, helping you to switch off the body’s stress response and in doing so, harness the myriad of wellbeing effects on both body and mind.

The effects of conscious diaphragmatic breathing, scent and nature on our wellbeing are profound, empowering and well-established in scientific principles – switching off your stress response and harnessing your body’s innate ability to heal itself.

What it can help to do:

PROMOTES RESPIRATORY HEALTH

HELPS TO BUILD CORE BODY STREGNTH

BOOSTS IMMUNITY AND REDUCES INFLAMMATION

The Science - The How & Why it Works

Our body’s systems are vital for life function without the need for conscious effort; they happen automatically through the autonomic nervous system which controls our heartbeat, blood flow, breathing, digestion and in turn our emotions.

Neural signals in response to our environment start in the limbic area of the brain, which is closely linked to memory and emotion and uniquely our sense of smell, and cascade through the sympathetic or parasympathetic neural networks that constitute the autonomic nervous system maintaining balance and equilibrium in both body and mind.

The Sympathetic Nervous System.

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for our stress response otherwise known as “flight-or-fight’. It evolved as a survival mechanism enabling us to react quickly to dangerous situations, and triggers a cascade of the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol that make the heart pound, the breath quicken, muscles tense, shoulders and fists rise, jaw clenches, eyes widen and the mouth goes dry (as blood is diverted from the gastro-intestinal tract) we feel anxious, terrified, scared and ready to face danger.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System.

The parasympathetic nervous system otherwise known as ‘rest and digest’ slows us down, instilling calm and focus of both body and mind. This happens when we feel safe, our heart rate and blood pressure lowers, anxiety is reduced, blood is diverted to the abdominal organs, the liver, kidneys, spleen, and intestines improving digestion and boosting immunity as well as elevating our mood. The vagus nerve (or pneumogastric nerve) is part of the parasympathetic nervous system and is the neural interface between the heart, lungs and digestive tract. The vagus nerve also innervates the diaphragm, the muscle that sits between the chest and the abdomen.

These two complimentary and opposing neural networks that constitute the autonomic nervous system cannot work at the same time, it is either one or the other, maintaining balance between body, mind and environment.

Sometimes this balance is disrupted.

Although the ‘flight or fight’ response is vital for life, keeping us safe in times of real danger, problems arise when it is triggered inappropriately. This is beyond our conscious control and means that everyday challenges often lead to permanently elevated levels of cortisol. This chronic, low grade stress response is extremely detrimental to our health, leading to high blood pressure, anxiety and depression, poor sleep, irritable bowel, poor digestion and can contribute to obesity, reduced immunity and more.

We are only beginning to understand how these systems react with the third part of the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system which governs the gastrointestinal tract. It acts independently of the para sympathetic and sympathetic systems but can be influenced by them. It is also called the second brain as it developed from neural crest cells and as well as controlling the motor function of the gut, it also controls secretion of the gastrointestinal enzymes. These enzymes communicate through neurons very similar to the central nervous system with neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, hormones that effect our mood and sense of wellbeing.

Therapeutic Breath

Breathing is the only one of our systems vital for life that we can directly control. Through conscious diaphragmatic breathing, we can, via the vagus nerve, switch on the parasympathetic nervous system consequently switching off the stress response and switching on our rest and digest.

When working as an obstetrician, Caryn noticed just how powerful breathing techniques could be as part of the tool kit for managing the pain and stress of labour.

It is also well-documented and used in the armed forces to help cope in moments of extreme stress such as injury or torture.

Therapeutic Scent

The sense of smell is closely linked with memory and emotion and gives scent the powerful and unique ability to influence the autonomic nervous system through the limbic area of the brain. This means it can augment the power of conscious diaphragmatic breathing through these unique neural pathways, as well as enhance the efficacy of the breath by providing focus for the mind.

Furthermore, research suggests that the single most important sense in our wellbeing response from immersion in nature is scent.

Our founding scent is emblematic of the wild water meadows at Thyme, where the essential oils from wild mints, grasses and flowers are released into the air as you brush past, creating an iconic and unforgettable memory. Our water meadow scent not only reminds and helps you to take a deep breath with soothing essential oils beneficial to respiratory health, it also provides focus for the mind, with a golden thread that immerses you in nature.

Water Meadow Scent

Our water meadow scent is created by carefully blending botanical essential oils. With water mint and apple blossom at its heart, it also includes the essential oils of chamomile, peppermint, rosemary & eucalyptus that encourage deep breathing provide focus for the mind and promote clarity of thought.

This understanding of the power of breath to heal our bodies forms the inspiration behind the creation of the Bertioli breathing & bathing collection, founded on the four key pillars of breath, scent, nature & simplicity.

Essential Oils

Mint is a medicinally important plant; the essential oils promote respiratory health & deep breathing. Both invigorating and relaxing, it is a sweet and gentle herb that has the ability to both invigorate and calm. It is a strong antioxidant with a cooling and analgesic quality that helps soothe, relax and elevate mood.

Active Ingredients

Menthol and methyl salicylate both bind with the bodies cold and opioid receptors conferring both a cooling and analgesic effect. These soothing essential oils have anti-inflammatory, and anti- microbial properties all beneficial to the respiratory tract, skin and the digestive tract. They are also known to enhance cognition, helping to focus the mind, enhancing memory, mood and motivation.

Breath

The essential oils of both water mint and peppermint (a naturally occurring hybrid between water mint and spearmint) in our water meadow scent remind and encourage you to take a deep breath. Research shows that it is the cooling sensation induced by menthol that makes breathing feel easier and in doing so focuses the mind on the breath, there is no actual change in upper airways resistance. Its antimicrobial anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties soothe and calms the respiratory tract.

Skin & Hair

When rubbed into the skin the mint essential oils have a cooling effect as they stimulate the cold and opioid receptors in the skin. This in turn leads to dilatation of the blood vessels in the skin that results in warming, soothing and a reduction in inflammation. Together with antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties they are beneficial to both the skin and the hair and scalp leaving you feeling fresh and clean.

Digestion

The essential mint oils have a calming and anti-spasmodic effect on the digestive tract soothing irritable bowel and aiding digestion.

Therapeutic Nature

We are at a moment in time when our planet needs our help, with the destruction of wild spaces and loss of habitat being the greatest threat to nature.

It has long been established that spending time outside has a myriad of wellbeing effects. Our products are rooted in wild spaces and together with stories of their flora and fauna we hope to inspire a love of nature and consolidate an understanding that in nurturing nature we nurture ourselves.

Simplicity

Scents of nature in turn provide a deeper connection to and engagement with the natural world inspiring us to take action to protect and conserve it, empowered by the knowledge that in nurturing nature, we nurture ourselves.

Designed with minimal packaging and championing concentrated formulations, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint.

Luxurious and effective, our hair and body bars replace the polluting clutter of bathroom plastics and eliminate excess. A typical shampoo or conditioner bottle carries 85% water, demanding the use of plastic bottles and dramatically increasing the carbon footprint of transportation.

The extent of plastic pollution is far-reaching, and recent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 40% of seabird species examined. Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands – nowhere is safe.

COVID-19

The healing power of breath, our sense of smell and the importance of our connection to nature have often been overlooked, their vital contribution to the wellbeing of both body and mind not fully appreciated. Nothing has highlighted their importance more than Covid-19. Our products, through the therapeutic power of breath, scent and nature help you to switch off the body’s stress response and so, well-established in scientific principle, engage the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

The Beauty of Simplicity

Gone are the days when you arrive in your hotel room to find a collection of bathroom minis at your disposal, only for them to be replaced with fresh ones each time housekeeping pop by. The time of the hotel mini is limited, with many hospitality businesses making the switch to refillable bottles that cannot be taken away. But what about taking it step further?

980 tonnes of travel-sized products are dumped annually

Our breathing and bathing collection embodies Thyme’s mission, to conserve the beauty of the land through generations of love, for generations to come. Our 3-in-1 Hair & Body bars will be waiting for guests in each of our rooms, with an aim to inspire and show those that we welcome through our doors, that luxury and efficacy can still be fulfilled without the harm to our beautiful earth that is caused by single-use plastics.

“Of the 15 million people who buy travel size products each year, over 6.5 million adults do not recycle the plastic waste. This amounts to 980.8 tonnes of travel miniatures being dumped every year – the equivalent of two-and-a-half Boeing 747s.”

— Direct Line Group

We encourage our guests to take our bar home, to use again and again, in a bid to eliminate the idea that shampoo has to come in a plastic bottle.

We are at a moment in time when our planet and nature need our help.

We aim to instil a love of nature and consolidate the understanding that in nurturing nature, we nurture ourselves.

“The number of shampoo bottles condemned to landfills in a year could fill 1,164 football fields.”

— Sustainable Jungle

A typical shampoo or conditioner bottle carries 85% water, demanding the use of plastic bottles and dramatically increasing the carbon footprint of transportation. Our shampoo and conditioning bars are designed with minimal packaging and concentrated formulations. The final product are luxurious and effective, replacing the polluting clutter of bathroom plastics and eliminating excess water to significantly reduce our carbon footprint.

We are passionate about showing others that you do not have to have a bathroom filled with dozens of lotions and potions in single-use plastic bottles to achieve luxury, and that

true elegance lies in the beauty of simplicity.

Patterns of Nature: Water Meadow collection

Patterns of Nature: Water Meadow collection

Our water meadows at Thyme are the flood plains of the River Leach - a chalk stream, flowing through the Cotswolds landscape and into the River Thames. Covering 40 acres of land, we manage this space for nature.  These meadowlands have a rich tapestry of wild grasses and flowers, as well as phenomenal birdlife, insects and mammals.

Rivermint, Yellow Iris, Willow and Buttercup are all botanicals that thrive in this wetland habitat, each playing an important part in this glorious ecosystem. Using fabrics and wallpapers from Bertioli’s new Water Meadow collection, each pattern has been created using water colour paintings by founder Caryn Hibbert.

“Our water meadow collection is rooted in the wild water meadows at Thyme immersing you in this very special place. My water colour paintings depict the plants that grow there such as willow, wild river mint, sedge grasses and yellow flag iris. Together they create patterns that tell stories of nature that embrace my love of traditional English country house style and our way of living.”

- Caryn Hibbert

The carefully observed botanicals create patterns that are evocative of the wild and, together with Bertioli’s signature Water Meadow scent, create interiors that are calming, nurturing and beautiful.
